Biografie
Einer der einflussreichsten amerikanischen Country-Sänger war Johnny Cash. Er wurde 1932 in Arkansas geboren und verstarb im September 2003 in Nashville, Tennessee. Seine Markenzeichen waren nicht nur kritische Lyrics, sondern auch seine einzigartige, dunkle Stimme. Neben Country gehörten Rockabilly, Blues, Folk oder Pop zu seinen musikalischen Einflüssen. Im Vorprogramm von Elvis Presley hatte Cash 1955 seinen ersten großen öffentlichen Auftritt. Zu seinen ersten Chart-Erfolgen gehören der weltberühmte 'Folsom Prison Blues' und auch 'I Walk The Line'.
Insgesamt schrieb der Musiker über 500 Lieder, darunter auch einige mit seiner späteren Ehefrau June Carter. Allerdings war die Karriere des Country-Sängers durch Drogenprobleme überschattet. Nach einem schweren Entzug schaffte Cash schließlich den Sprung zurück ins Rampenlicht. In den 70er Jahren war er auch in kleineren Fernsehrollen als Schauspieler zu sehen. Im Jahr 2002 erschien das letzte zu Lebzeiten veröffentlichte Album von Johnny Cash. Die Songtexte beschäftigen sich mit den Themen Tod, Liebe und Leben nach dem Tod. Ende der 90er Jahre wurden bei dem Sänger zwei schwere Krankheiten diagnostiziert und im September 2003 starb Johnny Cash im Alter von 71 Jahren.
Auch nach Cashs Tod erschienen noch zahlreiche zuvor unveröffentlichte Lieder. Bis heute inspiriert der 'Man in Black' zahlreiche andere Künstler und sein bewegtes Leben wurde mit dem für fünf Oscars nominierten Film 'Walk the Line' dokumentiert.
