Steffi had a falling out with her parents;
She ran away; she couldn't take it anymore.
Then she met Rolf, who said, "Come with us,"
And they moved into a house that was about to be demolished.
Then Tom wallpapered the walls,
And Mike repaired the windows,
Katja painted the stairwell in bright colors.

And when the money wasn't enough,
They took on whatever jobs they could find;
The house was finished when winter began.


They called themselves Children of the Rainbow,
For they believed in the good in the world.
They wanted to live together in peace,
Each in the way that they thought was right.

When Astrid stayed away one night, offended,
They searched for her until they found her again.
And when they cut off their electricity and water,
There was nothing they couldn't overcome together.

One morning, people came,
Broke down all the doors,
They smashed the beautiful house, stone by stone.

And they stood in the cold,
But their dream was not yet over,
Because everyone had only learned from it.
