Ella Fitzgerald wurde am 25. April 1917 in Newport News, Virginia, geboren und wuchs unter schwierigen Umständen in Yonkers, New York auf. Schon früh zeigte sich ihre Leidenschaft für Musik und Tanz, doch erst ein Auftritt bei einem Amateurwettbewerb im legendären Apollo Theater in Harlem 1934 brachte sie ins Rampenlicht.
