The Stargazers' Gutter Songtext

The Stargazers' Gutter Songtext
We were two million strong
On the day of our parade
Reverend Jackson waved his arms
And the audience obeyed
And we all raised our placards
That had been pre-made
By the newspapers
To hold their own front pages
Now I′m out on the corner
With my guitar and a hit
When up limps the man
And he issues me a writ
I said "I'm really getting fed up of all this
From that overflowing stargazers′ gutter"
Now the rag and bone man's
Making a killing on the street
While the bankers and the lawyers
Aren't making ends meet
For they can′t attend their meetings
As they′ve no shoes upon their feet
But any sleep over this I'm sure not losing
So when you holy men and heathens agree
Come lie down next to me
Come lie down next to me
Take the weight off your aching feet
And come lie down right next to me
Now the empire′s weary
From the hunger and disease
And the emancipated colonies
Are free now their treasures
Are safely overseas
In the bellies of our children
And their children
See the world held it's breath
Back in nineteen sixty nine
Now he′s bandages on his wrists
And shoes tied up with twine
And he's crying into his beer
And he′s losing track of time
For his mind couldn't handle the glory
Now the rag and bone man's
Making a killing on the street
While the bankers and the lawyers
Aren′t making ends meet
For they can′t attend their meetings
As they've no shoes upon their feet
But any sleep over this I′m sure not losing
So when you presidents and paupers agree
Come lie down next to me
Come lie down next to me
Take the weight off your aching feet
And come lie down right next to me
Now our heroes and their widows
They are dying as they lay
While the taxman and the gasman
Tightens his grip every day
But don't worry for that nuclear
Stallion′s on its way in his well-pressed
Brand new issue sheep's clothing
Now the rag and bone man′s
Making a killing on the street
While the bankers and the lawyers
Aren't making ends meet
For they can't attend their meetings
As they′ve no shoes upon their feet
But any sleep over this I′m sure not losing
So when you civil servants and soldiers agree
Come lie down next to me
Come lie down next to me
Take the weight off your aching feet
And come lie down right next to me
On the day of our parade
