ilene Songtext

Them pits were a mirage, she used the songs, came held me by the hand
Where the strong sense of guilt, where my mother′s façade had begun
I slept in the doorway till no one had known where I'd been
And the forces at work were mysterious beyond my command

And I took my leave and a well-earned reprieve
And I drink from the fountain again
I walk with God down the steep promenade
And move everyone viewed as a sham
And I explore the ways that the flesh fornicates
And you never earn more than you spend
Here where I lie′s not at all fortified
It's not if they'll get me, but when

Your lines in the streetlight look sultry and sallow and thin
While the eyes up on top look like something upon one might depend
And I hope to God that the frequent postcards that I′ve sent
All emanate love from their perch up above on the fridge

And I took my leave and a well-earned reprieve
And I look to the fountain again
I′d gone with God down the steep promenade
Just looking for means to an end
Explored the ways where the flesh fornicates
And you never earn more than you spend
Here where I lie's not at all fortified
It′s not if they'll get me, but when
