The Wilderness Songtext
von Grant‐Lee Phillips

The Wilderness Songtext

We are shapes and silhouettes of people
But it′s dim, and I can't make out a face
They approach with the rumble of thunder
Do I let them in or guard the gates?

I can hear the discord of their voices
The growing laugh with every step they take
I cannot tell mirror from monsters
It′s a choice that I have to make

We may have found our way out of the forest
We may have build ourselves a great nest
But the wild blood in our veins still courses
We never left the wilderness
We never left the wilderness

There are strange movements in the darkness
And your heart begins to pound
But it could be your brothers and your sisters
Your own neighbours crying out

We may have found our way out of the forest
So that we could stand and beat our chest
But the coldness in our veins still courses
We never left the wilderness
We never left the wilderness

You become the very thing you fear
You become the monster, we must confess
We never left the wilderness
We never left the wilderness
We never left the wilderness

We never left the wilderness
