The People Songtext

The People Songtext

Look into my eyes, we used to tell me what you see
We could be the same, but holding different company
Always twitching, I′m away, but clamored, I am free
And I have paid my debt but to a good society
Long ago, I was a father to a family
With a heavy burden made it pain upon me
I do what I must do to fill the mouths that I must feed
With my final gamble, put the chains around my feet

We hold something, we have nothing
All of us are lost and holding on
We hold something, we have nothing
All of our dreams and hopes are all but gone

Punishment for what I've done was harsh beyond belief
Sentenced for my crime, I was transported overseas
Time became a cruel one, careless, cold heart enemy
The faces of my children, just a distant memory
Fill my glass with whiskey while the silent night is cold
From where I′ve gone to where I am, the story we just told
What a strange and awful harvest from the seeds I have sown
What was once my penitentiary is now my home

We hold something, we have nothing
All of us are lost and holding on
We hold something, we have nothing
All of our dreams and hopes are all but gone
