We Should've Gone Dancing Songtext
We wished away every hour
Willing the evening to come
It had been so very long
Since we went and had a little fun
She tried on every dress she owned
Each one an extraordinary sight
We should′ve gone dancing tonight
She sat at the dresser and combed
Her hair and drew on the lines
She'd like to do around her eyes
To me they always looked fine
But she′d clean it off and start again
As many times as it took to get it right
We should've gone dancing tonight
I recalled the dusty little store
Where the dress she chose out I spied
And as I fastened the clasp
She tilted her head to the side
And I softly kissed her tender neck
Her eiderdown skin so soft and white
We should've gone dancing tonight
Then something fell from the sky
A cruel wind it blew through the place
And she was a beautiful mess
As dirty lines streamed down her face
And to this day I don′t recall
What really started the fight
We should′ve gone dancing tonight
I wandered around for a while
Just looking for somewhere to go
Saw all the faces laughing and smiling
Through every bar window
So sat in a boarded doorway
Under a flickering streetlight
We should've gone dancing tonight
And there I sat soaked in summer rain
Until I was tired of feeling sore
Took a deep breath and made my way
Gingerly back to her door
The house was so cold and so quiet
And my girl she was nowhere in sight
We should′ve gone dancing tonight
If only I'd known all along
That that would be our final day
What I′d give to get back just one
Of the hours that we wished away
And I replay it over and over again
Hoping in the end this time we might
Just go out dancing tonight
We should've gone dancing tonight
Willing the evening to come
It had been so very long
Since we went and had a little fun
She tried on every dress she owned
Each one an extraordinary sight
We should′ve gone dancing tonight
She sat at the dresser and combed
Her hair and drew on the lines
She'd like to do around her eyes

But she′d clean it off and start again
