The valley unrolls to the edge of the eye
Distracting drivers from a treacherous climb
As they rage, "Quiet in back" and, "Look at that view"
And, "Can you look away from that screen one second, you two?"

There′s liberty in the expanse
That stays with Jacob for the rest of the day
Until he comes back that night and closes his eyes
Holds steady while the road turns away

The family left behind
Couldn't fathom why he chose to go
The neighbours sagely sighed
"Guess no-one really knows
How close the shadows roam."


After the funeral, searching for clues
Confusion keeping grief from the door
They found a box of notebooks, tepid poetry
He′d been writing all his life in secrecy

Recording an unravelling mind
The lines grew darker with each passing rhyme
Until there was just one phrase, over and over again
"They'll catch me next time"

The violence on the page
No fantasy, but grisly real
A startling revelation
Even those you're closest to
May be hiding from you

A cautionary tale
Maybe one that you′d rather never hear
But do me one good turn
Keep an eye out at home
You never know where shadows roam
