The Black Watch Songtext

Out on the porch we aged our spirits
Out on the porch we came alive
We wound the days down reconciling
With this world we leave behind
I′d like to think we did the best we could
To blow the doors off all they thought they knew
And yet I wonder how much of it matters
When a man must face the tomb

How deep is the river there, my friend
I once thought I knew
But in the end I know nothing
Tell me, how deep is the river there, my friend

Blurry hindsight romanticizes
The creation of survivors
For that which did not kill us
Only made life that much longer
And even now we cling onto the anchor
Of obsolete conviction
A species left exotic
Bordering on our extinction

How deep is the river there, my friend
I once thought I knew
But in the end I know nothing
Tell me, how deep is the river there, my friend

We are the Black Watch here in peace and war
Waiting for sackcloth to hang down our door
And when the shroud comes down what will be found
These are the questions I seek answers for

Delta mirages tempt me from afar, I hear them whispering
How deep is the river there, my friend
The palms exhale into the void, they've found a fitful breeze
How deep is the river there, my friend
A mobile of prime movers hanging from a slate ceiling
How deep is the river there, my friend
Their fingers scrape and bleed, they′re seeking reciprocity
How deep is the river there, my friend

We are the Black Watch here in peace and war
Waiting for sackcloth to hang down our door
And when the shroud comes down what will be found
How deep is the river there, my friend
