It was a cold and bitter night
As I stepped into the bar
To listen to the young men brag of stories from afar
One told tales of courage
The other tales of pain
And one told tales of horrors
That drove good men insane

One told of valor
And victories he had won
And one told tales of ancients
Older than the sun
And one told us the tales
Of the maidens he had bed
And then the old man in the corner
Faced us all and said

What makes you better than I am?
What makes a man a man?
Is it ability to lead?
To bring to nations to their feet?
Or to wipe out an enemy with a wave of his hand?

For the indifference of good men

I hung my head in silence
For I knew that he was right
And gathered up my things
