It′s been over twenty years since he went away
She no longer misses him every day
But she knows she'll miss him always
Mostly in the small ways

They never had a chance for the big moments
None she can talk about anyway
Never had kids, never got married
Never even held hands in the light of day


One more ride would′ve got them to Denver
From there they didn't know where they'd go
Maybe south to Albuquerque
Maybe Northwest to Idaho

She sometimes sees his cigs on the dashboard
Mostly when she′s tired and the road gets long
But that doesn′t make her sad anymore
Just sets her mind to wondering what went wrong

Even strangers could see they belonged together
But some of us knew it could never be
Wonder if he saw that they'd never make Denver
It was preordained, he had to leave


She did not forgive him when he went away
I know she would if he came back today
She just hopes he misses her always
If only in the small ways
