Round a farmhouse table in the candlelight,
A company of Boers sat talking one night;
They had got word; from a good source they heard
That a British army supply wagon train
Was soon to pass through their domain
They knew to a man where they would outspan.
On those wagons there was coffee and sugar and such
And other commodities they needed so much
So plans they were laid for a morning raid.
Listening in was the farmers daughter
Raised in a time of civil war
With them she wanted to go but her mama said "no"!
Took her rifle down from its hiding place,
Put on a big hat to cover her pretty little face,
Dressed in tweed and corduroy,
For all the world, she was a boy!
Girl on commando, on her pony in a fight to be free

Watched her father in the moonlight and her brothers
Ride through the gate with all the others,


Saddled her pony right then; rode off to join the men.
The wagons had an escort of twenty five
The commandant said "we gotta get that prize,
Cause a diversion at dawn, take what we want and be gone.
With her rifle in her hand in that headlong race
And a big hat that covered her pretty little face.
Dressed in tweed and corduroy.
For all the world she was a boy!

It happened just like the commandant said,
The enemy weren′t even out of bed
And a getaway they made; nobody was scathed.
Papa saw his daughter's pony and he realized
She′d been on commando with them on that ride.
He was proud but amazed; her mama flew into a rage.
Put her rifle back in its hiding place.
Took off her hat to show her pretty little face
And on account of her mama's protest,
Showed she was a girl and put on a dress
But she went on commando, on her pony in a fight to be free
