They′ve got us all laid out in tents,
In beds and stretchers and on blankets

These lovely girls from 'round the world
Their eyes they twinkle and they shine
And suddenly I came to realize;
Green or grey or brown or blue, doesn′t matter what the hue
There's a deep compassion in the eyes.

Now Georgie lying next to me is close to death as he can be,
He has wounds he hardly can endure,
But cool hands on his brow will give him reason just to go on living,
She moves on now she's tending to a Boer.
Then she speaks to me in Dutch, but her caring means so much,
All I know is what she said is wise.
Doesn′t matter what she said, here beside me by my bed
I saw the deep compassion in her eyes.

The matron comes to do her rounds, her face is hard but what I found,
Around here eyes are traces of laugh lines,
So really all is not in vain I know that she′ll laugh again.
When we all get through these awful times.
She puts it on to get things done, not only me but everyone
Knows deep down she has love she can't disguise,
They say she′s even shone her lamp in a nearby concentration camp
With that deep compassion in her eyes.
Heard someone say the other day, some nurses they had passed away
They caught the same disease as us and died.
I saw a battle-hardened wounded soldier trying to hide his grief,
He looked away and he broke down and cried.
The padre came around today and told us that there is no way
That an Angel ever dies.
They've gone to heaven everyone on account of what they′ve done,
God saw the deep compassion in their eyes.
