Geordie Songtext

As I roved over London Bridge
On a misty morning, early
I overheard a fair, pretty maid
Come lament for the life of a Geordie

Won′t you saddle for me my milk-white steed
And fetch for me my pony?
And I will ride to fair London Town
And I'll plead for the life of me Geordie

For he ne′er stole ox and he ne'er stole steed
And he ne'er mattered any
But he stole 16 of the king′s wild deer
And he sold them down in the valley

Oh, when she′s come to London Hall
They were lords and ladies, plenty
And down a bended knee, she fell
Saying "Spare me the life of me Geordie"

Well, the King looked o'er his right shoulder
And he cries "I′m sorry, bonny
My pretty, fair maid you've come too late
Oh, he′s been condemned already"

Oh, if I had you on yonder plain
Where times there have been plenty
With my broadsword and me pistol too
I'd fight you for the life of me Geordie

Well, he ne′er stole ox and ne'er stole steed
And he ne'er mattered any
But he stole 16 of the King′s wild deer
And he sold them down in the valley

Let Geordie hang on a chain of gold
Has chains there′s ne'er been many
Oh, because he came from royal blood
And he courted a fair, young lady

As I roved over London Bridge
On a misty morning, early
I overheard a fair, pretty maid
Come lament for the life of a Geordie
