You moved your hands
Across your face
You stood from the table
Crossed the floor
And walked out into the night

In your wake: the cold draft
The doors swinging and then sighing shut

Still in this city at night
There′s no place dark enough to disappear in

Wet pavement and slushy streets
The dull ache of our cold damp feet


Empty towers
Lit up like electric candles
Sending their steam plumes
Into the frigid air

Still in this city at night

We leaned in
Between drinks and the din and the traffic out in the street
Over which we could not speak
Then stepped outside
And disappeared into the city
