I watched a deer fight to escape a wolf-bite
And when the prey had fled having barely bled
The long-fang came after me instead
I stood there dumb
Fear-struck and numb
When the beast did come after an easier prey
Then I turned and flew through the morning dew
In the orange hue of the break of day


To the house I ran
More creature than man
More on instinct than with any kind of plan
As I reached the door I knew then for sure
My life depended on my swiftness of hand
As I rushed in
Light tore the day from the night
Destroying the fright in a terrible scene
And I looked around
Scanned all over the ground
No trace of the wolf to be found
Only me
