The blues is a stone
I′m gonna make it my own
A lost dog in the woods
Part of my livelihoods

A murder most foul
A weak spirit and a howl
No barking at the moon
The nights come too soon

I was born a white male
And they said I couldn't fail
But my head showed up first
Yes, I came upon this world unrehearsed

No mystery train
The sky full of rain
Knee-deep in the dirt
I feel lonely and hurt


An empty hotel
Inhale the filthy smell
No place for a broken heart
A vanished counterpart

Torn between love and hate
I try to accept my fate
But religion and lust
Make me think of a motion of distrust

The milkman rang
I could hear how he sang
A black man with a voice
Taught me how to rejoice

Sunday morning in church
I got a soul with a smirch
A slut in the afternoon
In the Last Chance saloon

The blues is a stone
Has taken the overtone
Now I know what to choose
I′ve got nothing to lose


But then I climbed a door
And fell hard on the floor
A broken arm and a scar
I'll never learn to play the guitar
