Back in the Canyon Songtext

Way back in the canyon, where we built our home
Out among the falcons, rabbits, and the voles
On the day that Helena came to cut our hair
From the porch we saw fire, rising through the air

But the trees, they were not burning
And no smoke billowed forth

The flames towered above us, at least five stories high
And melded with the clouds in the evening sky
We heard far off drumming, drawing ever near
Then crashing through the bushes came about a hundred deer

The light went orange and purple
And then twisted into rings

The children came running out, but they saw nothing
They only jumped off a chair and ran off with our phones

Then we heard speaking coming from the ground
The earth began to tremble and groan beneath the sound
It said "Though you loathe your body, it is who you are"
Helena said "OK, whatever" and ashed into the yard

We went on back in the house
And poured ourselves some rosé

The voice kept talking out there, but we weren′t listening
The hills were full of the sound, but we didn't care

We turned on the news
A catfishing scheme went wrong
The lights out there slowly faded
Canyon shadows grew long

All that went away
All that went away
I held you in my arms
And all that went away
